Learn the art of storyboarding from Sherm Cohen, Disney and SpongeBob storyboard artist.
How to do what you love and earn a living? Become a storyboarder!
While traditional animators and newspaper comics are increasingly hard to find, storyboard artists are in high demand!
The most advanced CGI animated film uses hand-drawn storyboards. Just take a look at any concept album about a Pixar, Dreamworks, Sony or Disney movie and see that the storyboards draw the same as they did 30 years ago.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg – box-office blockbusters with special effects are in dire need of competent storyboarders to map out the “plan” and create pre-visualizations. Feature films, computer games, TV series, and even commercials require more and more storyboarders every day.
And you already have half of what you need – you already know how to draw. It remains only to unravel the mysteries of storytelling strategies, technical requirements, and format-specific challenges. Do you know how to make links? When to do a zoom out, a fade, a banana pan, or how to avoid frame jumps?
I didn’t hear about these things even when I started – and in these days of tight deadlines and equally tight budgets, on-the-job training has sunk into oblivion altogether. When a studio needs a storyboarder, they need someone who can demonstrate a willingness to jump right in and start producing killer storyboards from day one.
